Chinese Language Center Hosts C-talk: Martial Arts, Introducing Students to the Beauty of Kung Fu

Date:2023/10/26

On the evening of October 24th, Chinese Language and Culture Center(CLCC) successfully organized a captivating C-Talk: Chinese martial arts, led by Instructor Tang Xinqi. The event provided foreign students with the opportunity to learn fundamental movements of Chinese martial arts, including stances like horse stance, bow stance, and various punches, leaving them with a memorable experience.

Chinese martial arts, with a history that stretches far back in time and a broad base of enthusiasts, is a cultural heritage that has evolved and accumulated over the course of Chinese history through daily life and conflict. Beyond its practical applications in physical fitness and self-defense, Chinese martial arts also boast unique elements of performance art and aesthetics. Especially notable are the graceful and agile movements, well-balanced postures, rhythmic coordination, harmonious patterns, as well as the intense dynamism and profound artistic expressions displayed in martial arts. All of these aspects leave a deep and lasting impression on those who experience them.

Instructor Tang Xinqi, who practiced martial arts at age two, explained the diverse categorizations of martial arts during the lecture, distinguishing between traditional Chinese martial arts and competitive martial arts. She introduced students to various schools, such as the Northern style (Long Fist), Southern style (Southern Fist), and internal styles (Tai Chi, Baguazhang, Xingyi). This allowed the students to gain a better understanding of the diversity within Chinese martial arts.

It also emphasized the multifaceted training purposes of martial arts, including building muscle strength, endurance, explosive power, bounce ability, speed, agility, balance, flexibility, and coordination. Martial arts serve not only as a sport but as a holistic training regime that helps individuals improve their physical fitness and overall well-being.

At the conclusion of the lecture, students displayed enthusiasm for Chinese martial arts and expressed their joy at having the opportunity to acquaint themselves with this ancient and beautiful art form. They look forward to delving deeper into the study and practice of Chinese martial arts, recognizing it as a beneficial physical activity and cultural experience.

Chinese Language and Culture Center will continue to host a variety of cultural events, providing students with more opportunities to explore and experience the richness of Chinese culture.
